Welcome To

Preparatory Academy

Kids come to me sometimes at the point where they feel helpless. Parents feel that way for sure! Kids sometimes feel like they are destined to never learn math, or they are simply not math people. And that’s just not true! Anyone can learn math. You just need someone to help you get to a point where you think you can do it, and then it’s almost like magic – BOOM! The kids learn math. BOOM! The kids ask to do just one more problem. BOOM! The kids want to have another session a week with me. BOOM! The parents are happy because their kids are happy.

I help kids not hate math. I help kids understand math. I help parents get their child’s math troubles off their chest. I listen, I come up with a plan, and I implement it. And everyone is happy! (Secret goal in life: I just wish everyone would be happy.)

What Does 1300 Mean?

When I was looking for just the right name for my tutoring business, I spent some time researching names of mathematicians, and math terms that would sound great… Nothing really caught my eye. Then I decided to look at female mathematicians, after all, I am a woman who enjoys math, and I believe we are all mathematicians. What I found was very interesting…

In 370 A.D., Hypatia was the first recorded female mathematician. She was from Alexandria, and her father (a prominent Egyptian Mathematician) encouraged her to pursue math and sciences. Her work on conic sections is still used today. And then, the next recorded female mathematician, Sophie Jermaine, was in 1776 in Paris, France. Sophie was very interested in mathematics at a young age and even managed to attend a math academy at age 18. She contributed ideas and theories to Fermat’s Last theorem which paved the way for what we know today as elastic theory.

I thought it was such an interesting fact that 1300 (thirteen hundred) years passed between the first and second female mathematicians and quickly fell in love with the name 1300. I needed that to be my business name. 1300 Preparatory Academy pays homage to all of the unrecorded female mathematicians during those years. It’s our goal to keep those kiddos who are not heard from in the classroom – for whatever reason – to be heard in a safe space with us. It’s our goal to give those kiddos a voice.

What is your cancellation/illness/reschedule policy?

As a busy mom of young children and a business owner, I completely understand that life happens, schedules change, and people get sick. I want to be as kind and flexible as possible, and hate to charge clients when I haven’t provided a service. Unfortunately, the truth is the more cancellations and rescheduling that I do, the more money I lose to feed my family and keep a roof over our heads.

Most people wouldn’t question Jet Blue when they are charged for a missed flight. Most people also wouldn’t question the Hyatt when they are charged for a missed reservation. So why wouldn’t we treat a missed tutoring session in the same way? For all of those cases, missed reservations mean a loss of income.

Missed sessions accumulate over time and add up to thousands of dollars in lost income.

That being said, our policy is as follows: tuition is due by the 20th of every month for the following month. I expect students to meet with me weekly to show improvement. If payment is not made by the 20th of the month, your spot will be given to the next student on the waitlist.

There are no refunds for any services or products provided. I understand that sometimes schedules need flexibility. This is why we communicate with parents before the 15th of every month to ensure our schedules still match up and to learn when a makeup session is needed. Makeup sessions must be done within the month and only if there is availability. There are no makeup sessions for groups.

I’m grateful for your business and I’d love to provide the services that you’ve paid for. Stay healthy!
